T-Mobile mobile broadband
T-Mobile is notable for its guarantee of no excess usage charges and this means that you can sign up with them knowing exactly what you'll pay each month.
T-Mobile's mobile broadband service is already widely available and fast and they are rapidly extending coverage. Their returns policy is less generous than other mobile phone companies, so do be careful to check that there is coverage where you need it before buying.
Best for
- No excess usage charges - fair usage policy applies, but no risk of extra money being taken from you
- Free WiFi HotSpot access
- Speed - fast downloads and uploads
- Sharing - Sharedock allows mobile broadband to be shared just like wireless home broadband
Returns / cancellation policy
T-Mobile currently has the least generous policy of all the networks. Customers must cancel and return their equipment within 7 days of receipt. The terms and conditions aren't clear, but it looks as if you can't return your mobile broadband after use. This means that you have to rely on T-Mobile's coverage checker rather than being able to see what coverage you really get.
Also bear in mind that if you move to a new area after the end of the returns period and find yourself without coverage, T-Mobile will hold you to your contract and normal cancellation fees apply (see below).
If you want to cancel your contract before the end of your minimum term, you will have to pay a cancellation charge. This will be the total of your monthly line rental multiplied by the number of months you have left in the minimum term of your contract. T-Mobile will then deduct 4% of that amount. So if you’re on an 18 month plan and wish to cancel after 8 months, you’ll have to pay a cancellation charge equal to your monthly line rental for the remaining 10 months (less 4%).
You can move to another T-Mobile plan of the same or of a larger monthly cost at any time in your contract term - no surprise there! Unfortunately, you can't change to a lower monthly cost plan until the end of your contract.
Use abroad
Use of mobile broadband abroad is currently expensive for all mobile broadband suppliers, and T-Mobile is no exception. It's still good value though, if you're travelling for business.
The cost in the EU is £1.50 per MB and £7.50 in the rest of the world. This is good value for email use (and Outlook 2007 users can use "download headers" to keep costs more firmly under control).
Excess charges
The best thing about T-Mobile is that you won't be charged any extra for exceeding your download allowance. This means that you can choose a plan based on what you think you need, rather than having to go up a size to be safe as you have to with the other networks.
T-Mobile does have a fair usage policy. The details aren't really clear, but are likely to involve the download speed being reduced. It's fair enough, of course, as T-Mobile don't want you buying the cheapest plan and then downloading as much as their most expensive plan allows.
